Janis is the Co-Leader of the Surfrider Rise Above Plastic Committee in San Diego. The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches for all people through a powerful activist network. Janis is an educator, artist, and activist who advocates for common-sense single-use plastic reduction policies in San Diego County and is involved in environmental literacy and justice projects through the San Diego Area Writing Project. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and has an MA in teacher leadership. She is looking forward to helping reduce tobacco product waste in our communities, along our waterways, and at our beaches. She values partnering to help ensure that everyone enjoys indoor and outdoor environments free of secondhand smoke. In her free time, Janis enjoys spending time with family and friends, taking long walks at the beach, and making art with the plastic marine debris she picks up.
