Help Us Research Cigarette Butt Pollution in San Diego Soil!

The Policy Research Center for Tobacco and the Environment is launching its next research project, and we need your help, San Diego!

We are accepting 10 community nominations for areas to conduct soil testing for tobacco chemicals, and will select 5 based on data collected in partnership with community volunteers. To participate, tell us about a San Diego location you would like to nominate, use iKickButts to count and clean up tobacco product waste in that area on two occasions, and send us your data as a PDF report. Participants may receive up to a $100 gift card.

We are offering multiple ways to participate to make it as easy as possible. You can request to borrow supplies or be accompanied by a trained Center staff member for data collection. Please note that to be eligible, data collection must be completed before June 30th, 2026.

You can also submit a location even if you are not able to participate; we appreciate any information community members can provide.

Please see the documents below for more information.
